    “SWEET AND STRONG” REVIEWS

    Jancis Robinson

    Graham's 1972 Single Harvest Tawny
One of the first single-harvest tawnies made by Peter Symington after his family company acquired Graham in 1970. He nursed it through decades in wood before passing it on to his son and winemaking heir Charles in 2009. In 2015 Charles selected nine of the casks to bottle and release. Beautifully lustrous, shaded pale tawny. Toffee and a hint of rancio on the nose. Raisins and cut peel with a hint of eucalyptus. A host of Christmassy flavours indeed. But it's light and fresh on the finish. This is something very special. Transparent rather than heavy. In its smart but not OTT packaging, it would make a great Christmas gift. Urge the recipient there is no point in giving it any bottle age.

Graham's 10 Year Old Tawny Port
Mid bright tawny colour. Light nose. Raisiny fruit but not that vital. A bit low key. Dry, treacley finish. Beautiful packaging... Much drier than the Taylor's version. But actually with lots of interest and more obvious wood-aged character.

Graham's 20 Year Old Tawny Port
Very pale rose-coloured tawny colour. Not that aromatic but very delicate on the palate with some rancio character and marked acidity. Arguably too delicate to serve with food. I'd favour the 10 Year Old Tawny over this to serve with cheese and/or nuts. Sip this contemplatively. At its peak now so no point in keeping it. Very handsome packaging in a squat flask and wooden stopper - comes in a smart cylinder with wooden lid.

    Graham's 1983 Vintage Port
Transparent ruby. Fully evolved with beautiful round satin texture (all tannins fully dissolved) with a very winning combination of liquorice and haunting sweet red fruit. Very gorgeous. This is clearly a great vintage to enjoy now.

    Graham's 2000 Vintage Port
Mellow nose with cordite and dry finish on pretty tannic fruit. Not really ready yet but you could serve some food that would complement the liquorice sweetnes

"Bottled in 2013 (well done, Syms, for including this sort of information on your back labels). Very posh packaging with wooden stopper cork and wooden lid on the high quality cylinder. Very pale tawny. Lustrous tiger colour. Looking at it, you wouldn't necessarily realise this had been a red wine in its youth.

Delicate and beautifully balanced to a hint of rancio but of great age and elegance. Masses of sweetness on the front palate. Tastes like fermented brandy butter. There is certainly something buttery about the texture. Great freshness and lift. So clean! No hint of decay. Considering its age and jewelly, hand-crafted quality, this is far from overpriced. Seems crazy that at 30 years old it is so much cheaper than most 2010 bordeaux crus classés. A really lovely wine. Thoroughly satisfying and not a all a knock-out drop. Drink 2014-2018"

          DECANTER
          Richard Mayson's top 10 single-quinta Ports

Fine, open, classic floral aromas with a touch of rock rose. Sweet, minty, ripe palate – suave with a touch of dark chocolate at the core. Not especially big but supple and approachable. 17pts/20

          Drink: 2012–2025

            GRAHAM'S NE OUBLIE

You simply can't create complexity of this order in under a century or so...[There is] a cleanliness and a precision about the wine...a testament to 130 years of exemplary stewardship...a synopsis of life and time.

Andrew Jefford MW, World of Fine Wine.

It's an incredible piece of history...I could smell it a foot away from the glass, curling, intense, like bitter orange peel and caramelised clementines...[the palate] is rich with dried fruit and toasted almonds...”
