Above all, Graham’s standing as the leading producer
of quality Port arises from the impeccable pedigree of its
superb Vintage Ports which represent the pinnacle of fine
winemaking. The supreme quality benchmark set by these wines
is present throughout the entire Graham’s range of
Ports.
The keynotes of the Graham house style are exceptional concentration
and power, opulent richness, great poise and elegance as well
as remarkable longevity.
The beginning of the third millennium was very auspicious
for Graham’s with the declaration of its 2000 Vintage
Port which earned praise around the world, gaining an entry
into the Wine Spectator’s prestigious ‘Top 100
Wines of the World’, in which it was ranked in 9th place
overall, scoring an outstanding 98 points out of 100.
James Suckling of the Wine Spectator, one of the world’s
recognized Port experts, wrote at the time; “Graham’s
is a shining example of an established Port house pushing the
boat out to make even better wines through better viticulture
and winemaking methodology. This is the greatest young Vintage
Port from Graham I have ever tasted, and perhaps it will be
better in the long term than the legendary 1948”
Contemporary Symington family assessments of Graham’s
Vintage Ports -
Peter Symington, commenting on the Graham’s 1948: “One
can just go on dreaming about this amazing wine. Can’t
imagine anything better.”
Charles Symington, praising the merits of the Graham ’70:
“My favourite Vintage Port is the Graham 1970. I think
this wine has all the characteristics of a great Vintage Port,
combining elegance with power. This wine has a classic Graham
nose with mint and eucalyptus and yet still plenty of fruit.
On the palate, its fine flavour persists endlessly.
Perhaps the most accurate independent barometer of quality,
however, is the prestigious London based International Wine
Challenge, the world’s largest wine competition and blind
tasting, held annually, and attracting on average, 10,000 entries
from around the world. The competition’s judges invariably
include scores of the world’s leading wine experts. From
1993 to 2006, Graham’s Ports have amassed an impressive
tally of 23 gold medals making Graham’s by far the most
successful Port producer in the competition. Graham’s
has a richer gold medal score than many wine producing countries
taken as a whole.
